Vol. 188 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Peking Government: Debate on Admission to U.N.O.

18.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether a motion in the name of the Republic of Ireland that U.N.O. should debate the desirability of the admission of the Peking Government in China to the Organisation still stands for discussion by the General Assembly; and, if so, what is the earliest date that the discussion of such motion can take place.

The motion calling for a discussion of the item entitled "Representation of China in the United Nations" was proposed by India alone at previous sessions of the United Nations and by Nepal alone at the present XV Session.

The motion was disposed of at each session when voted upon. Motions in the United Nations do not carry over from one session to another.

The earliest date at which a motion, disposed of at either part of the present session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, could be re-submitted would be during the XVI Session which is due to commence next Autumn.

Could I ask the Minister whether he intends to put down a motion of this nature before the next Session?

We voted for the motion before. We had never put it down.
