Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons who have been charged with illegal possession of firearms in each of the years 1956 to 1960, who were also either charged or detained under the Offences Against the State Acts, 1939 and 1940; and the number of such persons who were (a) convicted and (b) acquitted.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

NUMBER of persons who were charged with illegal possession of firearms in each of the years 1956 to 1960 and who were also either charged or detained under the Offences against the State Acts, 1939 and 1940; and the number of such persons who were (a) convicted and (b) acquitted.

* Included in the figures for convictions are two cases (one in 1957 and one in 1958) in which the Court applied the Probation of Offenders Act.

* Included in the figures for convictions are two cases (both in 1957) in which the Court applied the Probation of Offenders Act.

†Seven persons were arrested on 31st December, 1956, and were charged under Section 52 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939. The charges were dismissed on technical grounds on 2nd January, 1957, but the men concerned were re-charged and on 14th January, 1957, all seven were convicted. There were no other charges under the Act in 1956.
