Vol. 188 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding of River Dodder.

5.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether the causes of the occasional serious flooding of the River Dodder have been established; if he will indicate his views on the possibility of a recurrence of the flooding; and, if there is any possibility of a recurrence, if he will indicate what action may be taken to prevent it.

The periodic heavy flooding of the River Dodder is mainly due to the relatively steep gradients of the catchment area, which in periods of prolonged rain precipitates water to the river channel in volumes that it cannot contain. In the last 30 years, the position has been aggravated by housing development. Works undertaken in recent years have improved the flow in the river channel, but further remedial works may be necessary to prevent the recurrence of heavy flooding on occasions of exceptional rainfall. I understand that a detailed investigation is being made at present by the Dublin Corporation with a view to ascertaining what action might be taken to obviate such flooding as far as practicable.
