Vol. 189 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Payers.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons assessed to income tax under each of the following classifications viz., (1) property owners and householders, (2) occupiers of land, (3) persons and companies engaged in trades and professions and (4) wage and salary earners and pensioners.

Income Tax statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable information to be given under the headings set out in the Deputy's Question. It is estimated, however, that the number of persons (including companies) effectively liable to income tax was 227,000 approximately for 1959/60, the latest year for which estimates are available. Of these about 180,000 were individuals whose main source of income was within Schedule E.
