Vol. 189 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Collection of Schedule A Property Tax.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance the annual cost of assessing and collecting Schedule A property tax.

The cost of assessing and collecting this tax cannot be segregated from the general cost of collection of income tax, sur-tax and corporation profits tax.

Can the Minister state how it is possible to evaluate the worth of this tax, if he does not know what it costs to collect it? Is it not a fact that the cost of collecting this tax is very high and quite out of proportion to its yield?

I do not know if it is out of proportion but I would say it is very little, if anything, out of proportion. I have given before the figure for the collection of income tax and sur-tax. It works out at about 3.8 per cent.
