Vol. 189 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rossbeigh (Kerry) Strand.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance whether there are any funds available in his Department to enable a road, car parks and caravan sites to be provided for the improvement of the extensive and popular strand of Rossbeigh, County Kerry; and if he will indicate the conditions under which the local authority may apply for such a grant.

There are no funds at the disposal of the Special Employment Schemes Office for the improvement of means of access to tourist centres as such. Assistance may occasionally be given for the improvement of roads that incidentally carry tourist traffic if they also qualify in the ordinary way as Minor Employment Schemes or Rural Improvements Schemes by being of direct benefit to agricultural lands. In this way a road leading towards the strand at Rossbeigh and about a quarter of a mile in length is at present being reconstructed as a Rural Improvements Scheme, at a cost of £368, of which £331, i.e., 90% is being met by way of a grant. The provision of car parks and caravan sites is outside the scope of these schemes.
