Vol. 189 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage by Itinerants in Leitrim and Sligo.

16.

asked the Minister for Justice if in view of the amount of damage done to fences and property of farmers by itinerants throughout Counties Leitrim and Sligo he will instruct the Gardaí in these counties to deal with the matter.

Damage caused by trespass is a civil matter and is not normally one in which the Garda Síochána can intervene. Even if the law permitted them to do so, there would be great practical difficulties, where itinerants are concerned, as has been recognised not only here but in other countries. A commission is at present investigating the various problems associated with itinerants and it is hoped that the commission may be able to put forward some solution.
