Vol. 189 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portuguese Activities in Angola.

9.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the recent reports of Portuguese activities in the colony of Angola; and whether he will take steps to express Irish disapproval of the actions now being taken by the Portuguese Government in Angola.

I have been following closely the recent reports of events in Angola to which the Deputy refers. The Government, of course, deplore repressive activities wherever they occur. As regards the situation in Angola the Irish delegation voted for the resolution on the question adopted by the General Assembly on 20th April. The operative part of this resolution reads as follows:—

The General Assembly

1. Calls upon the Government of Portugal to consider urgently the introduction of measures and reforms in Angola for the purpose of the implementation of General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV), with due respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations;

2. Decides to appoint a subcommittee consisting of five members appointed by the President of the General Assembly and instructs this sub-committee to examine the statements made before the Assembly concerning Angola, to receive further statements and documents, to conduct such enquiries as it may deem necessary and to report to the Assembly as soon as possible.

General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) which was adopted on 14th December, 1960, and for which Ireland also voted, concerns the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples.
