Vol. 189 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Pumps in Offaly.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the fact that Offaly County Council have decided to defer the erection of new and urgently required public pumps, and of the special demand for a public pump at Pullough, near Ferbane, where no water is available for human consumption or domestic use; that local residents are compelled to use water from the Grand Canal; and that such a supply cannot now be used because of oils, etc., appearing on the water from Bord na Móna operations; if he is further aware of the special circumstances concerning the demand for a public pump at Cappancur, near Tullamore, where no supply of water is available; and if he will take steps to compel the Council, as the appropriate health authority, to provide for the erection of new pumps where, in the opinion of the county medical officer of health, they are urgently required for domestic use.

I am not aware of the particular circumstances referred to by the Deputy affecting the demand for pumps at Pullough and Cappancur. I am informed by Offaly County Council that they have under consideration a programme for the provision of a certain number of public pumps. A decision in regard to individual supplies is a matter for the sanitary authority.
