Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Training in National Schools.

56.

asked the Minister for Education whether he will consider the introduction of physical training as part of the curriculum of national schools; and whether he will take steps towards providing better facilities for outdoor games and physical training generally, in national schools.

At present Physical Training is an optional subject on the curriculum for national schools and, in fact, many of these schools make provision for it. Last year a highly qualified Professor of Physical Training and Games Master was appointed to the men's training college, St. Patrick's, Drumcondra, so that the trainees leaving that college in future will have a sound knowledge of the methods to be employed in giving instruction in Physical Training and in organising games. A series of summer courses are being organised for existing teachers.

The general question as to whether the curriculum can be extended so as to provide for the introduction of Physical Training in all national schools is being examined by my Department.

Will the Minister answer the second part of the question?

The matter is being examined.

When I referred to facilities I meant playgrounds as well. Facilities would include playgrounds.

I think it is a regular feature of all schools to have playgrounds attached to them.

Not of sufficient size in which to play games.

Of course, the question of space enters into it, but I believe that in rural areas it is the invariable practice to try to secure a field adjacent to the school.
