asked the Minister for Education the present position regarding proposals for (a) the building of new schools and (b) the renovation of existing schools in County Kerry.

Following is the information requested:—

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS

Present Position

(a) New Schools:

Cahirciveen

Authority has been given for the invitation of tenders for building.

Listowel

Sketch-plans have been approved and the submission of layout drawings is awaited.

Castlegregory

Submission of the usual educational survey in support of the Vocational Education Committee's proposal to provide a new school is awaited.

(b) Renovations:

Killarney

The examination of full working drawings and specifications is in progress and when this is completed tenders for the work may be invited.

Dingle

A proposal by the County Kerry Vocational Education Committee to provide a semi-prefabricated additional classroom is under consideration.

When the sketch plans and estimate are received the Department will take up with the manager the question of the local contribution to be provided.

When these have been completed and approved by the Department and the Commissioners of Public Works, and satisfactory evidence of title to the site has been furnished by the manager the Department will sanction a grant towards the cost of the new school as soon as possible.

A site offered by the Reverend manager was originally regarded as suitable but following a decision to provide separate Boys' and Girls' Schools it was found necessary to obtain an extension to the site. The Reverend manager has offered an extension to the site and a report as to the suitability of the extended site is awaited from the Commissioners of Public Works.

A suitable site has been offered by the manager but it may be necessary for him to obtain an extension to the site depending upon the position of a well which he proposes to sink on the site. The Department is in communication with the manager regarding the sinking of the well.

A contract has recently been placed for the enlargement and improvement of this school. The work is expected to be commenced shortly.

A grant towards the cost of carrying out an enlargement and improvement scheme at this school has been sanctioned by the Department. Working drawings, etc., for the scheme have to be prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works. When these have been completed the Commissioners will arrange for the invitation of tenders for the works.

Bouleenshere Girls'

It is proposed to reconstruct the existing Bouleenshere Boys' and Girls' School as a Girls' and Infants' School and to erect a new school for boys on an adjacent site. A report from the Commissioners of Public Works regarding these matters is awaited.
