Vol. 189 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Operations in South-West Cork.

4.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate the areas in Cork South-West where land has been acquired by the Forestry Division of his Department and where work has not yet commenced.

The total productive area held at the five State Forests in Cork South-West is 13,822 acres, of which a total of 10,031 acres has been planted to date. So far it has been arranged that additional areas totalling 1,202 acres will be planted at these centres in the 1961/62 planting season; other areas may be added to the programme later. The balance of the unplanted lands will be held in reserve for planting in future years in accordance with normal forestry practice. In view of the large number of areas involved it would be impracticable to give details of the individual areas at which work is unlikely to start in the current year.

5.

asked the Minister for Lands the centres in which afforestation work is in progress in Cork South-West; and the number of men employed in each district.

There are five State Forests in Cork South-West—Dunmanway, Glengarriff, Inchigeelagh, Macroom and Rosscarbery. Work is in progress at various properties in each of these Forests. The total number of men employed at present at each centre is as follows:—

Dunmanway, 33; Glengarriff, 24; Inchigeelagh, 50; Macroom, 65, Rosscarbery, 29; a gross total of 201 men.

6.

asked the Minister for Lands whether it is proposed to employ any local men in the forestry scheme of Maulvannig, Kealkil, Bantry, County Cork.

The four men currently employed at Maulavanig property of Inchigeelagh Forest were transferred to the property when work was completed at another part of the forest. I understand that one of these men lives within a half-mile of Maulavanig and the others live within two or three miles of the lands. A fifth man is being taken on this week. Like the other employees, he is from the locality.
