Vol. 190 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ice-making Plants: Profit and Loss.

28.

asked the Minister for Lands what the profit or loss was in respect of each of the ice-making plants operated by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara at Killybegs, Murrisk, Cleggan, Galway, Dingle, Castletownbere, Schull, Ballycotton and Dunmore East.

I presume the Deputy is seeking this information for the latest year for which figures are available. I have not yet received the audited accounts of An Bord Iascaigh Mhara for the year ended 31st March, 1961, but the published accounts for the year ended 31st March, 1960, show that there was a loss of £6,325 on ice plants in that year after charging £2,377 for depreciation and £1,461 for interest paid to the Exchequer. To encourage the use of ice a grant of £6,000 was paid from the Fisheries Vote towards that loss so that the ice produced by the Board could be sold at £4 a ton. I might mention that the Board are at present selling ice at £2 a ton to fishermen who take it to sea. As the output of ice increases the cost of production per ton will, of course, be reduced.

I understand from An Bord Iascaigh Mhara that the losses in respect of the individual ice plants were as follows:—

Killybegs

£2,726

Cleggan

£61

Dingle

£299

Castletownbere

£3

Ballycotton

£437

Murrisk

£51

Galway

£681

Cahirciveen

£205

Schull

£506

Dunmore East

£1,356
