Vol. 190 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Supplies for Defence Forces.

12.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that the only variety of potatoes set out in his specification for tenders for the months of July and September are Duke of Yorks, British Queens, or Dunbar Rovers; and whether he will consider including Epicures and Home Guard, which are in more abundant supply.

I am aware that the varieties of potatoes set out in the specification for tenders for the months July to September are as stated by the Deputy. This specification was recently drawn up after consultation between Scoil Cochaireachta an Airm and an Roinn Talmhaíochta and it is not proposed at present to alter it.

In the event of the Minister's finding that supplies of the three varieties described are insufficient to meet requirements, will he consider adding the other two varieties which are pretty generally accepted to be edible and abundant during this period of the year?

If we cannot get the kind we want we shall have to consider the others.

The average citizen in the State has to consider them and is very glad to get them.
