Vol. 190 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Census Results.

2.

asked the Taoiseach when the results of the census taken on 10th April, 1961, will be available.

It is hoped to have the Preliminary Report of the Census of Population, taken on 9th April, 1961, available in August of this year. The definitive data on the distribution of the population by area should, if no unforeseen delays occur, be ready early in 1962.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the British Government took their census on the 17th April, seven days after ours, and published the result of it on the 9th June?

And is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that they were able to do that notwithstanding the fact that their population figures were up by over 2,500,000?

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say what preliminary figures will be available in August? Will it be just a global figure for the whole country? Will it be by provinces or by counties?

The total population, I understand.

For the whole country?

Does the Parliamentary Secretary mean that the preliminary report will be the preliminary report that is usually issued as Volume I?

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that, of the 2,500,000 increase in population in Great Britain, the great majority of the people constituting that increase are people who were driven from this country by the Fianna Fáil Government?

When is it likely that the census authorities will have the figures in respect of counties or constituencies? It seems a long time to be occupied in getting just the global figures.

I would want notice of that question.

If I give the Parliamentary Secretary notice, is there any prospect of getting the figures?

I do not know.
