asked the Minister for Lands (1) the annual expenditure on improvement works by the Land Commission in each of the last five years ended 31st March, 1961, (2) the reduction in personnel which has been effected in the last four years as a result of the completion of different stages of the work of the Land Commission, specifying (a) the grades and (b) the total saving in cost in respect of each member of the staff, and (3) the number of acres held by the Land Commission which are let at the present time and the percentage which such number is of the total number of acres held by the Land Commission.

Answers to the various parts of the question are in the form of a tabulated statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following are the details:—

(1) Annual expenditure on labour, materials and miscellaneous expenses required for the purpose of building works and general improvement works in each of the last five years.

The Staff suppressions took effect from various dates by reference to Branch cadres of staff and vacancies but not to individual officers. Information at (b), therefore, is not available in the precise terms sought. It may suffice to state that the total present cost of the suppressed posts is estimated at £40,000 per annum.

(3) Including mountain grazings, the current lettings by the Land Commission total approximately 49,400 acres, representing about 92 per cent. of the total acreage held, excluding lands classified as turbary, woods and waste.
