Vol. 191 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - National School Teachers: Statistics.

48.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of teachers teaching in national schools in each county in the years 1929, 1939, 1949, 1959 and 1960, and the number of (1) male, (2) female, (3) male lay and (4) female lay teachers in each county in these years.

Statistics such as those sought by the Deputy in respect of each county are not compiled by my Department. In order to supply them it would be necessary to assign a large body of staff for several days to the examination of the Department's records and I am not satisfied that this would be feasible or warranted. With the permission of An Ceann Comhairle, however, I propose to give in tabular form, for circulation with the report, statistics of the numbers of teachers for the country as a whole in respect of the years 1929, 1939, 1949, 1959 and 1960.

Following are the statistics:

The above figures do not include in respect of the years 1929, 1939 and 1949:

(a)monks and nuns in classification schools;

(b)supernumerary teachers in capitation schools;

(c)temporary additional assistants (introduced in 1938)

as statistics of these groups were not kept in those years. The figures for 1959 and 1960 include all categories of teachers.
