As far as I am aware, no local authority has made bye-laws with the specific object of controlling the use of transistor radios or other noisy instruments on the seashore. The corporations of Cork, Limerick, Clonmel, Dún Laoghaire and Sligo and the county council's of Cavan and Sligo have, however, made bye-laws controlling the use of wireless, loudspeakers, gramophones, amplifiers and similar instruments in public places. As to the second part of the Deputy's question, my Department has already drawn the attention of local authorities to their powers in this respect and recommended that they should consider exercising them in appropriate cases. Wider provisions dealing with the control of noise will be included in the Local Government (Planning and Development) Bill, 1960.
