Vol. 192 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Grants for New Houses.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider increasing the amount of State grants towards the building of new houses.

I am not in a position to make a statement in advance as to the contents of new legislation in regard to housing grants, which will become due for introduction next year.

In view of the higher cost of building, especially with the new wage increase, would the Minister consider bringing before the Government a proposal for larger grants in order to encourage private people and local authorities to build houses?

I can assure the House that all relevant factors that should be taken into consideration are being taken into consideration in the review at present going on in connection with the introduction of new legislation next year.
