Vol. 192 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Posts under Local Authorities: Classification of Member of A.M.C.

50.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that members of the Army Medical Corps, i.e., doctors and nurses, are not graded or classified as pensionable officers of a local authority when applying for a local authority post; and if he will take steps to have this matter rectified.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to him today by the Minister for Health, as regards the position of members of the Army Medical Corps entering the local service. As regards their pensionable status, there is no statutory authority for the aggregation of Army service with local service for the purpose of computing a pension under the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1956.

Would the Minister hold a conference between the Minister for Health, the Minister for Defence and himself to see what we should do in this matter?

In so far as the categories of people about whom the Deputy has addressed this question are concerned, the Minister for Health is the appropriate Minister.
