Vol. 192 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bord na Móna Houses: Purchase Scheme.

35.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if Bord na Móna will consider introducing a purchase scheme for their houses so that the tenants will be in a position to purchase them on terms similar to those of the local authority purchase schemes.

The object of Bord na Móna in building houses was to provide accommodation for its employees, in areas where houses would not otherwise be available. A tenant who ceases to be an employee must therefore vacate his house which then becomes available for another employee. Under a scheme whereby tenants might purchase houses, a large number of the Board's houses might, in due course, become tenanted by non-employees and would not be available for employees who required them. Accordingly, the Board do not propose that arrangements should be made for tenants to purchase their houses.
