Vol. 192 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Georgian Houses: Building of City Flats.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he considers that the preservation of the Georgian buildings in Seán MacDermott Street, Dublin enabled Dublin Corporation to provide suitable accommodation for people at reasonable prices; and, if not, if he will give an assurance that the preservation of Georgian houses will not be considered by him in the future as a sound reason for the Corporation not to build the most suitable and economic type of flats for the working classes.

The reconditioning of Georgian houses in Seán MacDermott Street was undertaken by Dublin Corporation during the Emergency primarily because of the difficulty in undertaking the provision of new buildings owing to shortages of skilled labour and materials. In these special circumstances, I consider that such schemes were reasonable and justifiable. Work of this nature has not been undertaken by the Corporation for some years past and, so far as I am aware, it is not proposed to resume it.
