Vol. 192 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway County Council Scholarships.

79.

asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of scholarships provided for successful students by Galway County Council (a) to secondary and vocational schools and (b) to university colleges for the year 1960-61, and (2) the number of scholarships that will be provided for successful students for categories (a) and (b) for the year 1961-62 owing to the increased grants from his Department.

I give for the Deputy's information the following particulars regarding (1) the number of scholarships provided by Galway County Council in 1961, and (2) the number which it is estimated will be provided in 1962.

In 1961 the Galway County Council awarded 11 scholarships, total annual value, £600, to Secondary and Vocational Schools, and 7 University Scholarships, total annual value £650.

Following the Scholarships Amendment Act of 1961, the amount allocated by the County Council concerned for scholarships in Secondary and Vocational Schools is £3,600 and the amount allocated for University Scholarships is £1,800. It is estimated that these sums will enable approximately 50 scholarships to Secondary and Vocational Schools to be awarded and approximately 15 University Scholarships.
