Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of River Lee at Tralee.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, further to a reply of 15th November on the draining of the River Lee at Tralee, he has received a communication from the Tralee Urban District Council stating that the flood relief scheme being undertaken by the Council has no connection whatever with the re-alignment of the River Lee and the repair of the broken banks; and if in view of the fact that the banks of the River Lee have been broken since 1926 and that the damage caused by the flooding of this river is considerable his Department will proceed with the drainage of this river as a matter of urgency.

The communication referred to has been received.

The Commissioners of Public Works are advised that the question of urban flooding in Tralee must be taken into account in considering rural flooding in the River Lee catchment, for both concern the Lee Valley and result from the same cause, namely, the coincidence of upland floods with high tide levels. As I have already indicated further study is needed before a decision about a drainage scheme can be taken.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Tralee Urban District Council have successfully relieved the flooding in the urban area and, in view of that, would he get the machinery, which is available for the main drainage, transferred to the River Lee?
