Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Subsidisation of Butter Sold on Home Market.

44.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether in view of the probable reduction in the amount of butter exported to Britain and the consequent reduction in the amounts paid by the State towards the subsidising of butter exports he will consider using any money thus saved for the purpose of subsidising butter sold on the home market with a view to encouraging increased home consumption.

The present restriction on the export of butter to Britain and the Six Counties will not result in a saving in export subsidy but rather in a postponement of its payment until exports are resumed. In any event I do not consider that a reduction in the home price of butter would result in any significant increase in consumption which is already at a very high level.
