Vol. 192 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Outdoor Knitters' Unemployment Benefit.

100.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the grounds on which his Department refuse unemployment benefit to outdoor knitters who become unemployed, particularly in County Donegal.

Persons who are insured as outworker knitters pay a special reduced rate of employment contribution in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Social Welfare Acts and the regulations made thereunder. This reduced contribution does not contain any element in respect of insurance against unemployment, and consequently such persons are not entitled to unemployment benefit when unemployed. The position in this respect is no different for outworker knitters in Co. Donegal than it is for persons similarly employed elsewhere in the country.

The remaining Questions for oral answer will appear on to-morrow's Order Paper.

I wish to give notice that I wish to raise the subject matter of Question No. 78 on the adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.
