Vol. 193 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Protein Values of Animal Feeding Stuffs.

92.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of a report of recent work carried out at the Rowett Institute in Scotland into the quality of protein concentrates manufactured from animal and plant sources and widely used in animal feedstuffs, which showed considerable variation in gross protein values within each material, emphasising the need for a rapid laboratory test to predict quality; and whether he proposes to carry out investigations into the matter.

I am aware of the experimental work being carried out at the Rowett Institute, and elsewhere, in relation to the assessment of proteins in animal feeding stuffs. I understand that a successful rapid method of testing of protein quality has not yet been devised. My Department will keep in touch with An Foras Talúntais regarding further developments.
