Vol. 193 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Signing Qualification.

62.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether a person in transferring from unemployment benefit to unemployment assistance must sign for three days for nothing before qualifying for unemployment assistance.

The answer to the Deputy's question is in the negative. Prior to August, 1960, such a person was required to serve three waiting days for which unemployment assistance was not paid. By virtue, however, of an amendment of the law contained in Section 11 of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1960, and operative from the 1st August, 1960, persons on transferring from unemployment benefit to unemployment assistance are not now required to serve a three day waiting period. Unemployment assistance is therefore now payable with effect from the day of transfer provided the unemployment continues for a minimum of three days and the person remains otherwise qualified.

Question No. 63 postponed.
