Written Answers. - Subpostmasters' Salaries and Allowances.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in respect of the year ended 31st December 1961 (a) the total cost to the Exchequer of subpostmasters' salaries, (b) the total amount paid to subpostmasters by way of extended telephone allowances, and (c) the total amount paid to subpostmasters by way of continuous telephone allowance.

The total payment to subpostmasters in respect of the year ended 31st December, 1961, was £788,000, including £17,750 for extended telephone attendance allowances and £18,400 for continuous telephone attendance allowances.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs (1) the number of subpostmasters' salaries reviewed under the triennial revision system during the year ended 31st December, 1961, and (2) the number of offices (a) in which salary increases were warranted and the amount of the increases, (b) in which salary reductions were warranted and the amount of the reductions, and (c) in which there was no change.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the estimated cost to the Exchequer of subpostmasters' salaries for the year ending 31st December, 1962.

The cost of subpostmasters' remuneration in the year ended 31st December, 1962, based on current rates of payment, is estimated at £790,000.
