Vol. 193 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Service and Disability Pensions.

80.

asked the Minister for Defence the maximum amount of money allocated in any year for (a) 1916 service pensions, (b) 1917-1921 service pensions and (c) disability pensions in each of the above periods and the Civil War period, and the allocation for 1960-61 in respect of each of these pensions.

Expenditure on pensions granted under the Military Service Pensions Acts and the Army Pensions Acts is accounted for without reference to the period during which active service was rendered by the pensioners or in which the wound was sustained or the disability contracted by them. It would not, therefore, be possible to give the figures of expenditure in the form requested by the Deputy.

The highest expenditure on military service pensions and disability pensions occurred in the financial year 1953/54 when the amounts were £647,298 and £179,481 respectively. The corresponding amounts for the financial year 1960/61 were £574,700 and £169,426 respectively.

81.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of persons (a) holding (i) the 1916 and (ii) the 1917-21 service medals, (b) in receipt of service pension for each of the above periods and (c) in receipt of disability pensions for (i) 1916 (ii) 1917-21 and (iii) the Civil War period (Regular Army and I.R.A.).

As the reply is statistical in form, with an explanatory note, I propose, a Cheann Comhairle, with your permission, to circulate it in the Official Report.
