Vol. 193 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Five-Day Week for State-employed Tradesmen.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the Government will consider introducing a five-day week for all tradesmen employed by the State; and, if so, at what date it is proposed to introduce it.

The Government do not regard it as their function to set a headline in this matter, but in so far as agreements providing for the working of a five-day week are negotiated between tradesmen and the general body of private employers, they are followed in the case of tradesmen employed by the State, subject to the exigencies of the public service.

Does the Minister mean that there is now no objection to the Board of Works, the Forestry Division and the Land Commission granting a five-day week to their employees?

I said that it would be given where it was given to the same type of employees outside.

Is the Minister aware that local authorities have given any employees engaged in forestry work a five-day week?

I think the question relates to tradesmen.
