Vol. 193 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rome Treaty.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that many people desirous of purchasing a copy of the Rome Treaty are unable to get it; and whether he will publish it through the Stationery Office or secure supplies for distribution by purchase generally.

I understand that a new printing of the English version of the Treaty of Rome is in course of preparation by the EEC authorities. Meanwhile limited supplies of the existing print are expected to be available through the Dublin sub-agents for the Community's publications.

I do not consider it necessary to seek an arrangement with the Community for the publication of an English version of the Treaty by the Stationery Office.

Will that new version be authenticated?

I do not know; there is some doubt about it on the part of the European Economic Community.

Will the Minister or the Taoiseach, as the case may be, try to see that they will do so?

Is this not an effort to give the best translation possible?

It is only a reprint.

Could we get an assurance from the Taoiseach that he will now read the Treaty of Rome before he makes any further speeches on it?

That might apply to the Deputy also.
