Vol. 193 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youghal Vocational School.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received an application from Cork County Vocational Education Committee to acquire a plot of land at Youghal, previously acquired by his Department for the erection of a Garda station, for the erecting of a new vocational school; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

An application was received from the County Cork Vocational Education Committee for a plot forming portion of the former coastguard property at Youghal for the erection of a vocational school. The plot in question is, however, required for the erection of a new Garda Síochána station to replace the existing station in Youghal which is old and in bad condition. The Commissioners of Public Works were prepared to facilitate the Committee provided a suitable alternative site for the Garda station could be provided by the Committee. Such a site, however, was not forthcoming and accordingly it is regretted that the site at the coastguard station cannot be made available for the new vocational school.

I might add that plans for the erection of the new Garda station are in hands and it is expected that building work will commence later this year.
