Vol. 193 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Sligo-Leitrim.

21.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that groups of farmers in many areas throughout the constituency of Sligo-Leitrim failed to get electricity installed in their homes when the area was being developed; and that these groups would be most anxious to have it installed now if the charge were reasonable; and if he will take steps to have reduced the abnormal charge being asked of these people for supply.

Under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1927 the Electricity Supply Board is empowered to fix rates and charges for electricity without reference to me.

I am aware that groups of farmers in the Sligo-Leitrim area and elsewhere throughout the country did not accept connection for electricity on the terms offered when their respective areas were being developed initially.

Connections made under post development work in an area cost more than under initial development and the fixed charges for such connections may be as much as 50 per cent, more than for connections under initial development.

The present Rural Electrification Scheme will be completed this year and policy with regard to the extension of supply to those who would not be connected under the present scheme is now under consideration. I hope to be in a position to make a statement in the matter at a later date.
