The statement that I made on 1st March explained fully why the Garda Síochána showed an interest in recent meetings organised by the NFA and allied matters.
I think that it is well, however, in view of some remarks that were made here on that occasion, that I should make it quite clear that I do not feel called on to make any apologies for the fact that the Garda Síochána made certain inquiries. There is nothing wrong in their doing so—it is their job to keep themselves informed if there is any suggestion of incitement to break the law.
They have not sought to force anybody to answer any questions and all those concerned are perfectly well aware that they can decline to answer, if they think fit. If at any time the Gardaí were to exceed their functions, I would not stand over them. But I cannot agree to tie the hands of the Garda Síochána by accepting that there is something wrong merely in their asking for information which is in no way secret in any event.
