Vol. 193 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dunmore East Fishing Dispute.

32.

asked the Minister for Lands if his attention has been drawn to a report of 5th March in which it is observed that the publication Irish Fishing puts the blame on his shoulders for the recent dispute at Dunmore East; and if he will make a statement on the different advantages enjoyed by Northern fishermen and those from the Republic of Ireland.

I have seen the report and do not agree with the opinion in question. Genuine Six-County fishermen are not prevented from fishing within our exclusive fishery limits but I have no function in regard to any advantages they may enjoy elsewhere. As I said in reply to a Question by Deputy Ormonde on 15 February, however, I understand that they do not qualify for a subsidy in respect of fish which they land in the Twenty-Six Counties. I added that I am looking into the possibility of improving conditions for our fishermen.
