Vol. 193 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duties and Remuneration of Subpostmasters.

35.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that a subpostmaster on continuous telephone service is liable for duty for a 168 hour week; and that his remuneration based on line allowance and units plus 4/1d. per hour is gravely inadequate; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

I am aware of the liability for attendance which provision of continuous service involves.

The present payments for continuous telephone attendance were approved following agreements reached at the Subpostmasters' Consultative Council on claims submitted by the Subpostmasters' Union. Claims for increases in the rates are at present under consideration by the council and it would be inappropriate for me, therefore, to comment on them at this stage.
