Vol. 193 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scholarship Awards.

42.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Education the percentage increases in, and the number of, free scholarships awarded by (a) his Department and (b) local authorities (1) from primary to secondary schools and (2) from secondary schools to universities in each of the years from 1957 to 1961, inclusive.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to have a tabular statement circulated with the Official Report in relation to the information sought by the Deputies. In regard to the figures for 1961 it is to be noted that the Local Authorities Education Scholarship (Amendment) Act, 1961, did not operate in respect of that year. Under its operation in 1962 the money available for scholarships to secondary schools will be increased by more than 300 per cent., and the amount available for University scholarships by more than 200 per cent.

Following is the statement:

andMr. McQuillan asked the Minister for Education the percentage of persons at (a) universities and (b) secondary schools in the Republic who are in receipt of scholarships which cover (1) their total fees and (2) their total fees with living allowance.

I have furnished in relation to another question from the Deputies information in regard to the scholarships awarded by my Department and by local authorities. While I am aware that a considerable number of scholarships from other sources are awarded in secondary schools and universities I have no detailed information in regard to them. Furthermore as I have no official knowledge in regard to the fees charged by secondary schools I am unable to state to what extent the scholarships awarded cover the costs.
