asked the Minister for Justice the rates of pay and expenses of court criers who accompany circuit judges and other members of the judiciary; what the duties of such officers are; by whom they are appointed; and if any qualifications are required for such posts.

Ushers attached to judges of the Supreme and High Courts are paid on the scale 177/2d. to 212/2d. a week in the case of persons appointed prior to 30th January, 1962, and on the scale 163/- to 184/3d. a week, plus a 15/- weekly allowance, in the case of persons appointed after that date.

Criers attached to circuit court judges are paid at the rate of 193/- a week.

Both ushers and criers are paid travelling and subsistence allowances at the appropriate Civil Service rates, subject to the general conditions attaching to the payment of such allowances.

The duties of ushers and criers are to render official and personal services to the judges. Appointments as usher or crier are made by the Minister for Justice. In addition to being of good character and health, appointees are expected to be suitable for the duties involved and to be able to drive a motor-car.
