Vol. 194 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Cork Embankment.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will have a proposal to erect an embankment from Fota Island to Little Island, County Cork for the reclamation of about 540 acres of tidal land and the protection of over 500 acres of valuable arable land at present flooded owing to twelve breaches in Land Commission embankments at Little Island and Glounthaune, County Cork examined by the engineers of his Department with a view to finding a permanent solution to the constant breaching and flooding of the village of Glounthaune comprising the parish priest's residence, the national schools and seventeen houses, some of which were recently flooded to a depth of seven feet.

My Department has no function in the matter of reclamation of tidal lands and has no responsibility in regard to the embankments referred to in the question.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the Land Commission, which is responsible for this, have not the machinery or the engineers to carry out the work? On previous occasions his Department, the Department of Public Works, carried out the work. Investigations were made jointly by his Department and the Department of Lands in connection with this in 1934.

I am aware of all that.
