Vol. 194 No. 9

Written Answers. - Income Tax and Sur-Tax Payments.

54.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total amount of income tax and sur-tax paid by individuals for each of the last three years for which such statistics are available and the number of such individual taxpayers in each such year.

Income Tax statistics are not compiled in such a manner as to enable the amount of tax paid by individuals as distinct from companies to be given. In connection with the preparation of national income figures, however, estimates of taxes on personal incomes are published in the report "National Income and Expenditure." Table A.5 of the 1960 Report gives figures for the years 1953 to 1960. Figures for 1961 are not yet available.

It should be noted that for national income purposes taxes on personal incomes include contributions to social insurance.

As regards the other information requested, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a question by Deputy Noel Lemass which appears as Question No. 11 on today's Order Paper.

Copies of "National Income and Expenditure, 1960" are in the Library.
