Vol. 195 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Lunchrooms.

27.

asked the Minister for Education whether arrangements are made in the construction of all new schools for the erection of a suitable lunchroom; and if any recoupment of expenditure is made from local authorities for this purpose in areas where the School Meals Act operates.

It is not open to my Department to allow grants towards the cost of erecting lunchrooms, the provision of which is a matter for the appropriate local authority. The question of the Department's seeking recoupment from local authorities does not, therefore, arise.

Where arrangements are made at the request of school managers for the provision of lunchrooms in new schools the cost must be defrayed by them and it is open to them to approach the local authorities for recoupment of the cost.
