Vol. 195 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Milk.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the estimated loss to milk producers per annum of a reduction of 1¼d. per gallon in the price of milk based on production for the twelve months ended 31st December, 1961.

During the year ended 31st December, 1961, the quantity of milk purchased by creameries from producers was 302,576,000 gallons which is the highest on record. The Deputy himself can, no doubt, translate into terms of £. s. d. the amount represented by this gallonage at 1¼d. per gallon or at any other rate.

Except that it is one penny less now.

The Deputy still cannot make it fourpence as was proposed by his leader in 1950.

The Minister is untrue in that.

He keeps on repeating himself.

Every week in this House, that will be driven home.

Will he drive home the 100,000 calves at 10/- a skull?

The records are here. Every week I shall drive them home.

Put them on the Table of the House.

I have circulated it around the country and so has the Leader of the Deputy's Party because he wrote to all the co-operative societies telling them about his proposal.

Put them on the Table of the House—not the Minister's figures but the correct ones.

This happened 12 years ago, but the Deputies opposite are sensitive about it because it was such a foolish, irresponsible statement.

It was a truthful statement which the Minister would not understand.

I will drive that home on every occasion.

The farmer has not much of the money given to him in the relief of rates left to him now.

The Minister would be a good judge of an irresponsible statement.

I will keep on driving it home.

Keep on stating an untruth and you will get people to believe it—you may even believe it yourself.
