Vol. 195 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Industry in EEC Countries.

43.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will give an account of the present position of the fishing industries in the countries of the European Economic Community; in particular, whether member-countries freely permit fishing vessels of other member-countries to fish in their territorial waters; or whether any negotiations to this end are at present in progress or contemplated between the member-countries.

The countries of the European Economic Community have not so far decided on a common policy for their fishing industries but, for trade in fishery products, they are progressively reducing restrictions among themselves and adjusting their duties on imports from other countries towards a common external tariff in accordance with the provisions of the Rome Treaty. I have no information which would suggest that member countries freely permit fishing vessels of other member countries to fish in their territorial waters or that they are negotiating to that end.
