Vol. 195 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage to Mayo Lands.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if he can take any steps to reduce or contain the progressive damage being done to lands in the Glosh-Foulmore district of the Mullet Peninsula of County Mayo by blowing or drafting sand.

A sand fixation scheme, involving the fencing and planting with bent grass of an area of 4 acres in this district, was successfully completed by the Land Commission more than 20 years ago. I understand, however, that the plantation was later destroyed as a result of storms and cattle trespass and that there has been a recurrence of sand blowing in recent years. I have asked the Land Commission to investigate the matter as early as possible.
