Vol. 195 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Levy.

16.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether the recent imposition by An Bord Bainne of a levy of one penny per gallon on milk supplied to creameries from 14th May is likely to lead to an increase in the price of milk to the consumer; the amount of money per annum which it is estimated will accrue to An Bord Bainne from this levy; and if he will give details as to the purposes to which this money will be devoted.

The reply to the first part of the Question is "No". The amount of money which will accrue to An Bord Bainne from the levy will depend on the quantity of milk sold to creameries. The levy moneys will be used by An Bord Bainne for the purposes provided for in the Dairy Produce Marketing Act, 1961 that is, to meet its expenses, including the industry's proportion of the losses on the export of milk products.
