Vol. 195 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Project Schemes.

11.

asked the Minister for Agriculture how many Land Project schemes are held up in (a) the Meath section and (b) the Westmeath section of the Kildare constituency because the drains in question run under a road bridge, not necessarily a main road bridge.

The numbers are (a) 2 and (b) 4.

Would it not be possible to come to some arrangement for an agreement with the particular county councils as the Department have already agreed with other county councils about these Land Project schemes?

Of course we try to reach agreement on these matters. As a rule, work of this nature is carried out by the councils and the cost of the work is refunded later to these bodies. Sometimes those bodies seek assurances which we regard as unreasonable and that is the main cause of the delays.

It is the Local Authorities (Works) Act which relates to them.

There is no provision for local authority works.

There could be.
