Vol. 195 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Industrial Assurance Policies.

18.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the fact that (a) most industrial assurance policy-holders are parties to a contract which binds them to pay fifty-two weeks' premiums on weekly business each year or eventually to suffer the loss of benefits of their policies and premiums paid, and (b) it has been the practice of some companies and societies who transact industrial assurance business in the State to fail to service their policy-holders' business for some periods each year, he will amend the Insurance Act, 1936 in such a manner that it will be compulsory for companies and societies who transact industrial assurance in the State to service their policy-holders fully for fifty-two weeks each year.

I am not aware that any hardship arises to the insuring public out of the collecting system at present being operated by the companies. Consequently, I do not propose to amend the law on the lines suggested.

I might mention that the Insurance Act, 1936, provides adequate protection for persons whose policies become lapsed through an agent's negligence.
