Vol. 195 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing Hours for Retail Grocery Shops.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce under what conditions he would be prepared to make an order under the Shops (Hours of Trading) Act, 1938, fixing closing hours for the retail grocery, provision and allied trades in (a) Dublin and other cities and (b) provincial towns.

In any application for an Hours of Trading Order the considerations taken into account include:—

(a) the extent to which such an Order would inconvenience the general public, and

(b) the feasibility of enforcing the Order.

I am always prepared to examine proposals for Hours of Trading Orders. However, in view of the considerations I have mentioned it is not considered that it would be either desirable or practicable to make such Orders in respect of the retail grocery, provision and allied trades.
