Vol. 195 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leinster Coalfields Survey.

16.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is yet in a position to indicate the results to date of the survey of the Leinster coalfields.

The drilling carried out to date in the Leinster coalfield has been effective in giving precise information as to the existence of coal, the thickness of the seams and the quality of the coal in certain areas and as to the absence of coal in other areas.

The drilling programme in the coal-field is expected to be completed within the next few months. However, until information has been gathered from all the planned boreholes, the full significance of the results being obtained cannot be deduced and it would be undesirable to give more detailed information until the entire programme has been completed. It is expected that the results of the survey will be available at the Geological Survey for inspection by the public about the end of the year.

Will any comprehensive report be issued for the information of Deputies, and the general public, following on this survey?

As I understand, people will be able to inspect the survey at the Geological Office.

Will there not be any comprehensive report which will indicate to public representatives the value of the survey from the point of view of what it has revealed in the way of mineral deposits?

If the Deputy will ask that question of the Minister at a later stage, he will be able to tell him.
